U.S. Standards

The SSCI follows the American National Standard for Steel drums and Pails, published in 2004. This is a revision to the ANSI MH2-1997 and incorporates ANSI MH2a-1998.

The ANSI MH2-1997 represented the first time that the DOT specification numbers were not part of the standard, switching to the UN performanced-oriented packaging (POP) standards. The performanced-oriented packaging standards are detailed in the DOT Title 49 CFR Part 178.

Historically, drums and pails capacities in the U.S. are expressed in gallons based on the rated (marked) capacity. For metric conversions, ANSI uses the following:

  • Gallons to Liters -- Multiply by 3.785412
  • Inches to Millimeters -- Multiply by 25.4
  • Pounds to Kilograms -- Multiply by 0.4535924
  • psi to Kilopascals -- Multiply by 6.894757
