About SSCI
The Steel Shipping Container Institute is a non-profit organization representing the manufacturers of new steel shipping containers. The SSCI's Regular Members include companies operating in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Suppliers of materials and components to the industry serve as Associate Members of the Institute, while foreign based steel container manufacturing operations are affiliated through the SSCI's International Members.
The Institute is actively engaged in representing the industry before federal agencies, and the U.S. Congress, maintains a constant liaison with industry associations and individual corporations, and is also active with international organizations, including the UN Committee of exports on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.
Meetings
The SSCI holds two membership meetings each year -- one during the Spring and the other in the Fall. SSCI Board Members meet at least twice a year between the two Spring and Fall meetings.

The Alliance
The Steel Packaging Alliance for Public Safety, or The Alliance, is a consortium of steel drum and pail manufacturers, steel producers, risk managers, insurers, and others who support the use of steel packagings for transporting flammable or combustible liquids. Activities
The Steel Shipping Container Institute, Inc., a corporation organized under the membership laws of the District of Columbia, having its principal place of business at 1101 14th Street, NW, Suite 1001, Washington, D.C.
The corporation was organized March, 1944 for:
The actual activities of the corporation parallel the objectives for which it was organized. The corporation furnishes bulletins on Government regulations applicable to the steel shipping container industry, together with summaries of the reports of meetings of the industry advisory committees to Government agencies. Various committees of the corporation are active in various fields for the purpose of assembling and disseminating to members information concerning the industry which is of interest to members.
Meetings are held by the corporation from time to time to discuss various problems of the industry, and special meetings are held upon request of Government agencies for the purpose of disseminating to members of the industry governmental policies. The association has two primary committees; a Technical Projects Committee who reviews technical studies and proposals to the industry as well as those specifications and regulations which affect the manufacture of product (i.e., Department of Transportation (DOT) military, ANSI, Rail and Motor Carrier, non-hazardous and testing by independents); and a Market Development Committee working to promote and publicize industry activities and programs, enhances industry image, and develops programs to assist members in promoting the use of steel shipping containers.
The corporation renders services to its members by keeping the members appraised of all developments in the industry. Bulletins and News Letters are issued to members as to the availability of raw materials, development of new products, development of new raw materials, and Government regulations applying to the industry. In addition, members receive reports giving the results and findings of various committees working on problems pertaining to efficient and economical operations in the industry.
The activities of the corporation are conducted along the general lines of any active trade association, and its activities are on a non-profit basis. Funds utilized by the corporation are received in the form of dues from its members.
